We answer some of the big questions about vaccines and how long one for coronavirus could take.
SEATTLE (AP) - The coronavirus may have been circulating for weeks undetected in Washington state, a preliminary finding that could mean hundreds of undiagnosed cases in the state that's also home to the nation's first confirmed infection and now the first death, researchers said Sunday after analyzing genetic samples of the pathogens. State and local authorities stepped up testing for the illness as the number of new cases grew nationwide, with new infections announced in Illinois, Rhode Island and Washington state. Authorities in the Seattle area said two more people had been diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus, both men in their 60s who were in critical condition. Those cases brought the numbers to six in Seattle. A man in his 50s died in Washington on Saturday and health officials said 50 more people in a nursing facility in Kirkland, Washington, are sick and being tested for the virus. Elsewhere, authorities announced Sunday a third case in Illinois and Rhode Island's first case as worried Americans swarmed stores to stock up on basic goods such as bottled water, canned foods and toilet paper. The hospitalized patient in Rhode Island is a man in his 40s who had traveled to Italy in February. As the fallout continued, Vice President Mike Pence and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar sought to reassure the American public that the federal government is working to make sure state and local authorities are able to test for COVID-19. Both said during a round of TV talk show appearances Sunday that thousands more testing kits had been distributed to state and local officials, with thousands more to come. "They should know we have the best public health system in the world looking out for them," Azar said, adding that additional cases will be reported and the overall risk to Americans is low. As...

President Trump meets Monday with pharmaceutical company executives on developing a vaccine against the new coronavirus, although experts say that could take a year.
Health officials have said it will be at least a year to 18 months before a vaccine is ready for the public.
Dr. Marcus Plescia, chief medical officer for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, joins Martha MacCallum on 'The Story.'
"We think there are good tools and approaches at hand that will find success, but we should not be too overconfident that this can happen quickly," Sanofi Pasteur's Dr. John Shiver said.
President Donald Trump was contradicted by a health expert on his coronavirus task force over the timing for a potential vaccine during a briefing Monday.
The president also repeatedly pushed pharmaceutical executives on how quickly they could create a vaccine for the illness.
Coronavirus vaccine: why a vaccination against Covid-19 won't emerge overnight – and how long it could take
The first possible vaccine against coronavirus is on its way to human testing. Just six weeks elapsed between when Chinese scientists released the sequence of the novel virus and when biotech company Moderna shipped its vaccine to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease to begin testing. It's a record-breaking pace for vaccine development. Seveal other companies also are working to get their vaccines into clinical trials. But testing a vaccine for safety and efficacy will take 12 to 18 months or more, officials say.
The coronavirus is steadily becoming an increasing concern all over the world, with a number of affected countries seeing a spike in both cases and deaths. Recently, while hosting the President of Colombia, President...
Viral Facebook posts use a photo of a vaccine for cows to falsely suggest that the novel coronavirus isn't actually new, alleging it is proof of "how much the media controls people."
