Health officials in the state of Washington reported the first coronavirus death in the U.S. on Saturday. President Trump said Saturday that 22 patients in the U.S. had coronavirus.
The US military is taking several measures to combat the spread of coronavirus amongst its troops. At least one US Army soldier tested positive.
The US Navy's 6th Fleet, which primarily operates around Europe and Africa, will impose a 14-day quarantine on ships between port calls in Europe in light of growing concerns over the coronavirus. Any ship visiting a European port will be required to spend at least 14 days at sea afterward, as first reported by CNN.
United Airlines, which controls 45 percent of the market at San Francisco International Airport, is the first US carrier to announce that it is cutting back its flying due to plummeting demand. It likely will not be the last as coronavirus fears put travel plans on hold. In addition to the flight reductions, United said it will offer employees unpaid leave, delay salary increases and implement a hiring freeze, moves which will reverberate in the local economy as the airline employs more than 13,000 in the Bay Area.
