Prisoners who test negative for coronavirus will be allowed out for an unspecified period as Tehran struggles to contain one of the worst outbreaks of the disease.
Iran temporarily released more than 54,000 prisoners in efforts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus outbreak in the country’s overcrowded prisons, as the disease has killed dozens in the country and infected 23 members of the Iranian parliament.
At least 54,000 prisoners who test negative will be released on bail . The measure does not concern prisoners sentenced to five or more years for security related offenses. To date, there are 2336 and 77 confirmed cases, but the number may be higher. A WHO team in the country to stem the epidemic.
